Originally established as Spurgeon Mortuary, Inc. by Jennings "Jay" and Jean Spurgeon, the business operated under their dedicated leadership until their retirement in 1983. At that time, Terry L. Ellyson assumed the role of President & CEO, marking a new chapter. The firm was initially renamed Spurgeon-Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. and eventually simplified to Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., reflecting the family's longstanding commitment to the community. In 2004, the family legacy deepened when Terry "Lee" Ellyson II, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, joined the business. After the unexpected passing of Terry L. Ellyson on July 22, 2023, Lee assumed the presidency, ensuring continuity of care and service.

Tragedy struck in early 2010 when the original funeral home structure was destroyed by fire. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, the Ellyson family rebuilt the facility that same year, with the new building officially opening in December 2010.
