About
Washington Funeral Home, Inc., located at 1404 Tappahannock Boulevard in Tappahannock, Virginia, has been a pillar of compassionate service in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula since its founding in 1969. With a legacy dating back to the early 20th century, the funeral home is built on a foundation of dignity, honor, and faith, operating under the motto "Sacred in Every Trust." Consistently rated 4.8 out of 5 stars, Washington Funeral Home is dedicated to providing personalized, respectful care to families in Essex, King and Queen, Caroline, and surrounding counties.
The story of Washington Funeral Home begins with its founder, Oliver D. Washington, Sr., who grew up in rural Caroline County during the 1930s. As a child, he was fascinated by the care provided to the deceased in his uncle's home, which served as the community's informal funeral service. This profound curiosity sparked a lifelong dream. After graduating from Union High School, Oliver pursued formal training at Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following two years of honorable service in the U.S. Army, he completed his apprenticeships and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He gained invaluable experience working with Mrs. Nannie Washington at Community Funeral Home in Newtown and with the Corbin family at Corbin Funeral Home in Essex County, which he later managed as Washington & Corbin Funeral Home. In 1969, Oliver realized his vision by constructing the current facility at 1404 Tappahannock Boulevard and establishing Washington Funeral Home, Inc.
The funeral home offers a full range of services, including traditional funerals, personalized memorials, pre-need funeral arrangements, and cremation services. Families can also access burial and cremation options with compassion and transparency. The facility is wheelchair accessible with on-site parking, ensuring comfort for all visitors. Since 1988, the family has expanded its offerings through Washington & Sons Memorials, providing monuments and memorial markers to honor loved ones. The dedicated staff, including Oliver's wife Blanche Washington, who joined full-time in 1997 after retiring from teaching, and their son Craig (who served until his passing in 2012), continues to deliver loving care. Today, the team remains committed to guiding families through every step, from making arrangements to grief support. They also offer a year-long daily grief support email program, reflecting their enduring commitment beyond the funeral service.
As a locally owned and operated establishment, Washington Funeral Home, Inc. blends a rich heritage with modern conveniences. Its website provides obituaries, resources for veterans, pre-planning tools, and a testament to the trust placed in them by the community. Whether serving longtime residents or those from neighboring regions, the funeral home remains a beacon of comfort and respect.
