The history of Morrison Funeral Directors is deeply rooted in the Texas Panhandle. The Morrison family's involvement in the funeral business in Dumas dates back to 1943, when Morris T. Morrison and his wife Juanita moved from Amarillo to work as funeral directors for Boxwell Brothers. In 1968, Morris Morrison and his two sons, Larry and Jim, purchased the funeral homes in Dumas and Stratford. The name was officially changed to Morrison Funeral Directors in 1970. In 1975, the family expanded by purchasing the Sunray funeral home, establishing locations in all three communities under the same name. The original two-story house that the Morrisons occupied from 1943 to 1962 served as both family living quarters and a funeral chapel; it was originally built in Texline in 1906 as a railroad section house. After moving the family out in 1962, the structure continued to serve the funeral home until 1982, when a major renovation added a 4,200-square-foot addition with offices, a casket selection room, state rooms, and a preparation facility. The new facilities were dedicated to Morris T. Morrison and Juanita L. Morrison, honoring their legacy.
Today, Morrison Funeral Directors maintains the tradition and heritage established by the Morrison family. The funeral home offers personalized funeral and memorial services, burial and cremation options, and pre-planning assistance to help families make arrangements in advance. The facility is wheelchair accessible, with on-site parking, and is open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM to accommodate the needs of grieving families. As Dumas's only locally owned funeral home, the staff—including director Todd Beeson—pride themselves on being not just funeral directors but friends and neighbors who are dedicated to serving their community with compassion and professionalism.
