About
Shell Funeral Home, Inc., located at 164 South Mount Vernon Avenue in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, is a family-owned and operated funeral home with a rich history of serving Fayette County and surrounding communities. Founded by Jerome W. Shell, Sr., the business traces its roots to 1963 when Mr. Shell, who had been an embalmer and manager at the Harold S. Gleason Funeral Home since 1945, entered into a partnership with Russell Ray. The two operated the Ray and Shell Funeral Home for two years before Mr. Ray retired. In 1970, the Shell family moved the funeral home to its current location, a property that originally housed the Rider home (built around 1910) and the Charles & Elizabeth Hill residence, now known as Hospitality House. The facility is designed to be accessible, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking, and offers on-site parking for families and guests.
In 1987, Jerome W. Shell, Jr., the founder’s son, purchased the funeral home. Having worked alongside his father since 1974, Jerome Jr. brought a strong foundation of service and education to the business. A graduate of Uniontown Area Senior High School, he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969, then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Pennsylvania State University. He graduated with honors from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1974. Jerome Jr. is an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 51, Amvets General Marshall Post 103, and is a past master of Fayette Lodge No. 228 F & AM.
The family tradition continues with the next generation: Laura Allison Sawyer-Villers, Jerome Jr.’s daughter, graduated with honors from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 2007. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Pennsylvania State University and a master’s degree from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. Laura is committed to carrying forward the family’s legacy of compassionate care.
