About
McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home, Ltd. has been a cornerstone of compassionate care in Houston, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding Washington County communities for over a century. Founded in 1917 as the Armour Funeral Home by W.M. Armour, the firm originally operated at the intersection of Main and Pike streets. In 1926, L.P. Speakman joined the business, becoming a partner in 1931 and sole proprietor in 1933. Recognizing the need for a larger facility as funeral customs evolved, Mr. Speakman purchased and remodeled a home on Cherry Avenue in 1946, which remains the funeral home’s location today. After L.P. Speakman’s passing in 1953, his son, William E. Speakman, took over and continued to grow the business, notably helping to establish the local ambulance service in the early 1970s. Robert K. McIlvaine joined the firm in 1975, became a licensed funeral director in 1979, and purchased the business in 1985, leading to the name change to McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home, Ltd. In 1997, the facility was enhanced with wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking, restrooms, and seating, reflecting a commitment to serving all families with dignity. After a brief affiliation with Woodruff Family Services from 1999 to 2008, Rob McIlvaine reacquired full ownership. A new chapter began in 2010 when Sara K. McIlvaine, Rob’s daughter, joined the funeral home. A 2010 graduate of Bethany College with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, she became a licensed funeral director in 2012, ensuring the tradition of high standards continues into the next generation. Today, McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home offers a comprehensive range of services, including traditional funerals, cremation, memorial ceremonies, graveside services, and veterans’ services. Every arrangement is personalized to honor the unique life and legacy of each loved one. The staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing guidance and support for local families as well as those making arrangements from a distance. The funeral home is renowned for its compassionate, family-like approach, as reflected in its outstanding 4.9-star rating and heartfelt reviews from families who have experienced their care firsthand. With a deep understanding of local traditions, faith communities, and cemeteries, McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home, Ltd. continues to serve Houston, Canonsburg, Meadowlands, Hickory, Eighty Four, Washington, and surrounding areas with professionalism, empathy, and unwavering dedication.
