Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, Inc. is a family-owned and veteran-operated funeral home located at 45 South Carlisle Street in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. Serving Franklin County and surrounding communities, the funeral home has been a pillar of compassionate care since its founding on October 1, 1948, by Harold M. Zimmerman and his wife, Jean (Knouse) Zimmerman. Harold, a lifelong resident of Welsh Run, Pennsylvania, graduated from Greencastle High School in 1941 and later earned his degree from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1942. After serving three years in the United States Army during World War II, he gained experience at several area funeral homes before establishing his own business. Originally located three doors north of its current address, the funeral home moved to 45 South Carlisle Street in 1952. In 1980, the adjacent property—one of the original 256 lots laid out by Greencastle’s founder, Colonel John Allison—was purchased. The two properties were connected by a 1,700-square-foot addition in 1988. That same year, Harold’s son, H. Martin Zimmerman Jr., who had joined the family business in 1981, became a partner, and the name was changed to Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home. Today, it remains Greencastle’s only locally owned and operated funeral home.
