About
Wappner Funeral Directors & Crematory, located at 98 South Diamond Street in Mansfield, Ohio, has been a pillar of the community since 1872. Originally founded as a furniture and undertaking business by Peter J. Faust and Philip Wappner Sr., the establishment quickly became a trusted name in funeral services. Philip Wappner Sr. was a charter member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association in 1879, and the business relocated to South Park Street in 1883. By 1890, Henry Wappner joined his father, and the firm became known as Wappner Brothers. In 1919, Philip's son Charles took over and moved the operation to the southeast corner of 2nd and Diamond streets. Following Charles's death in 1925, his wife Irilla assumed leadership, becoming the first female funeral director in Richland County. The business later moved to its current location at 98 South Diamond Street—land once owned by the legendary pioneer John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. In 2021, Wappner joined the Dignity Memorial network, a consortium of over 1,900 funeral, cremation, and cemetery providers across North America.
Today, Wappner Funeral Directors & Crematory continues to serve Mansfield and surrounding communities with compassion and professionalism. The funeral home offers a wide range of services, including traditional funerals, cremation options, personalized memorials, and life celebration receptions. Their onsite reception center provides a flexible space for gatherings of any size, from intimate family ceremonies to large celebrations of life. The staff is experienced in meeting the needs of diverse faiths and cultures, ensuring every service reflects the unique life being honored. Cremation services are handled with care, and their sister location in Ashland features an onsite crematory, guaranteeing that loved ones remain in the family's trusted care.
Pre-planning is a cornerstone of Wappner's mission, allowing families to make arrangements in advance and lock in current prices while relieving loved ones of financial and emotional burdens. They offer in-person and virtual consultations, a free Personal Planning Guide, and payment plans. Additional benefits include lifetime flexibility, relocation protection, and a purchase protection plan for cemetery property. For veterans, Wappner provides specialized programs and resources to honor their service. Grief support extends well beyond the funeral, with complimentary access to a 24-hour compassion helpline for up to 13 months after services, as well as an extensive online grief library.
Wappner's historic location maintains a unique tradition: each of its three locations (Mansfield, Ashland, and Ontario) features large grandfather clocks. These clocks originated from the early days when the business also rented hospital beds, and some beds were traded for the timepieces. Today, the clocks stand as a cherished symbol of Wappner's enduring legacy. With a 4.6-star rating and consistent dedication to excellence, Wappner Funeral Directors & Crematory remains a trusted partner for families during their most difficult moments.
