The funeral home has a rich history that dates back to the mid-20th century, when Adams A. Turner founded the Turner Funeral Home in nearby Tiffin after graduating from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. A chance encounter in the 1950s led a young John Phillip Engle to begin working at Turner Funeral Home, eventually becoming a licensed funeral director in 1958. In 1967, they established the Engle Funeral Home in Bettsville to better serve the local community.
In December 1999, Eric and Jennifer Shook returned to Tiffin from Loudonville, Ohio, where Eric had completed his apprenticeship. Later that year, the businesses were renamed Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory, with locations in Tiffin and Bettsville. In 2008, Eric and Jennifer made a significant investment by installing Seneca County's first crematory, expanding the services available to families.
