Her determination and vision transformed the funeral home, which at the time was in need of significant repair, into a respected institution. Mrs. Coutee, along with funeral director Aaron Gunn III, has ensured that Tutwiler Funeral Home is open to all races and ethnicities, a testament to its inclusive and compassionate approach.

The funeral home's history is marked by its role in two historic events. In 1955, the funeral home prepared the remains of Emmett Till, a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. Later, in 1985, it cared for Michael Anthony Felton, believed to be the first AIDS victim in Mississippi. These events highlight the trust and responsibility placed in Tutwiler Funeral Home during times of profound community and national significance. In 2002, Hurricane Isidore destroyed the original building, but Mrs. Coutee quickly rebuilt at the current address, incorporating a chapel and meeting room to continue serving dual roles as a funeral home and community gathering space.
