About
Colonial Funeral Home, located at 323 Second Street in Columbia, Mississippi, is a cornerstone of Marion County’s funeral service community with a legacy spanning over 100 years. The funeral home’s origins trace back to October 1880 when the Lampton Company, a well-known local mercantile family, opened for business. Their store included an undertaking and funeral department where caskets were sold as retail items. Around 1900, this department operated from a warehouse behind the store, and the first professional embalmer was employed. In approximately 1914, operations moved to a remodeled home on Second Street. In 1923, J.W. Smith joined the Lampton Funeral Home, and after a devastating fire in 1929 damaged the facility beyond repair, the business quickly relocated to another nearby building on Second Street to continue serving the community. In 1937, a group of local business leaders incorporated Colonial Funeral Home, with George Ben Lampton, H.H. Barnes, W.M. Lampton, E.H. Austin, J.W. Smith, and F.W. Thornhill as directors, officially transferring the Lampton funeral department to the new entity. J.T. Waldrop joined the board in 1947 and later became general manager after J.W. Smith retired in 1971. Another major fire on June 25, 1979 consumed a large portion of the funeral home, but Colonial temporarily operated from another facility while rebuilding. In 1987, Colonial merged with Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes, a family-owned firm, and in fall 1992, became part of the Dignity Memorial network, offering exclusive benefits while maintaining local, compassionate service. Today, Colonial Funeral Home provides a full range of funeral, cremation, and burial services. The facility is nestled in downtown Columbia and features spacious, comfortable amenities including two visitation areas, a hospitality room, and a large traditional chapel that can accommodate both intimate and large gatherings. The funeral home is wheelchair accessible with free on-site parking. Services offered include burial services, cremation services, and onsite chapel use. Families can customize services with special touches that reflect their loved one’s hobbies, favorite foods, or community service. The experienced staff, with over 80 years of combined expertise, assists with obituaries, photo collages, keepsakes, and catering scheduling. Colonial Funeral Home also offers prepayment plans, low-interest options, and a 100% service guarantee through Dignity Memorial. With a 4.9 rating from 104 reviews, Colonial Funeral Home is dedicated to providing exceptional, compassionate care to families in Marion County and surrounding areas, honoring lives with meaningful tributes that celebrate each individual’s unique story.
