The history of Wulff Woodbury Funeral Home traces back to 1884, when 24-year-old German immigrant August Wulff founded what would become the oldest continuing business on St. Paul’s East Side. Originally a cabinet maker, August began serving his community by making caskets by hand and transporting them by horse and wagon—or sleigh in winter—from his home at East 7th Avenue and Bradley Avenue. As demand grew, he established a location at 895-897 East 7th Avenue, known as the Wulff Block. In 1911, his son Arthur joined the business, prompting a name change to A.L. Wulff and Son Undertakers. After August retired in 1925, Arthur focused solely on funeral services, discontinuing the furniture side of the business. The family legacy continued with Owen Wulff joining in 1934, and later Gregory Wulff became the fourth generation to lead. Under Gregory’s direction, the business expanded significantly, acquiring and refurbishing Godbout Mortuary in 1988 and constructing Woodlane Mortuary—now Wulff Woodbury Funeral Home—in 1990 to meet the needs of the growing southeastern suburbs.
