The business was founded on May 1, 1928, by Alexander DeVito, who immigrated from Tufo, Avellino, Italy, in 1912. After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War I and assisting local undertakers during the 1918 influenza outbreak, Alexander was inspired to enter the funeral profession. In 1930, he established one of the first dedicated funeral home facilities in the greater Boston area by purchasing the Hurley Estate at 392 Cambridge Street in East Cambridge. Following World War II, his sons Edward and Alfred joined the business, and the family expanded operations to Watertown at 761 Mt. Auburn Street. A major addition in 1960 made it one of the largest funeral homes in the region. The third generation—Alfred M. DeVito Jr. and John F. DeVito—joined and led the expansion to Arlington in 1983, purchasing and renovating the Fessenden home site. The Arlington location was fully refurbished with additional space in 2001, and both the Arlington and Watertown facilities were updated with new carpet and furniture in 2011 to maintain a comfortable, modern atmosphere. The fourth generation, John and Jonathan DeVito, became licensed funeral directors in 2011, ensuring the legacy continues. In 2009, the DeVito family was entrusted with the funeral business of Saville and Grannan Funeral Home and Cremation Service, continuing that heritage as well.
