About
Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, located at 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, Louisiana, is one of the oldest continuously operating funeral homes in the United States. With a rich history dating back to 1854, this family-managed establishment has served generations of families in the New Orleans area with unwavering compassion and professionalism. The funeral home is part of the Dignity Memorial network, ensuring a high standard of care and a 100% service guarantee.
The story of Leitz-Eagan began when German immigrant Ambrose Leitz opened a cabinet shop near the Mississippi River. In an era when cabinet makers were often called upon to build coffins, Ambrose began what would grow into a multi-generational legacy. After his death in 1879, his widow, Louise (known as "Widow Leitz"), expanded the business over the next 30 years, earning a reputation for alleviating distress in the community. Their son Fred introduced embalming and parlor services. Later, Fred's daughter Agatha and her husband Charles J. Eagan Sr. formed the Leitz-Eagan companies. Their five sons each served in the U.S. military and later joined the family business, expanding to three funeral homes and three insurance companies. The flagship location on Magazine and Phillip closed in 1992, but the Metairie location, established in 1968, continues to uphold the family's legacy. In 2001, Leitz-Eagan expanded its Westbank presence by merging with Westside Funeral Home in Marrero. The funeral home celebrated its 160th anniversary in 2014.
Leitz-Eagan offers a wide range of services including traditional funerals, cremation, burial services, and onsite catering. The facility is designed with comfort and personalization in mind. The plant-filled atrium with a fountain creates a welcoming first impression. The main chapel can accommodate approximately 200 guests in pews, featuring stained-glass windows, a pulpit, and an organ. Four parlors with sofas and chairs offer a reception-style setting for about 100 people each, and two rooms can be combined for larger visitations. The funeral home also provides a porte-cochère for inclement weather. Accessibility is ensured with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking.
The team at Leitz-Eagan celebrates life by creating personalized memorial services that reflect each individual's unique story. From festive Mardi Gras themes to traditional services or military honors, they work with families of all faiths and cultures. They were among the first in the area to offer a full Catholic mass in their chapel. The funeral home also offers pre-planning options, with up to 10% savings on prepaid plans, as well as financial assistance through CareCredit. They are available 24/7 and actively involved in the community, partnering with local churches and hosting community memorial services. With a 4.9 rating from over 200 reviews, Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home continues to provide exceptional care and service to the greater New Orleans area.
