About

Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home, located at 4895 North Preston Highway in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, is a pillar of compassionate care and enduring service in the Louisville area. With a legacy spanning over 130 years, this family-owned funeral home has grown from humble beginnings into a trusted provider of traditional funeral services, cremation memorials, and personalized celebrations of life.

The roots of Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks trace back to 1892, when Edward Schoppenhorst, a German immigrant’s son with a calling for undertaking, opened his first funeral home in a stately 1865 captain’s home on West Market Street in Louisville. That historic building, featuring a unique 11-foot French glass door containing glass from every European country, still stands today as a testament to the firm’s rich heritage. For decades, Edward and his wife Flora cared for families with unwavering compassion and attention to detail, building a reputation for dignity and excellence.

In 1976, Ben Underwood purchased the West Market Street location and, together with funeral director Herb Morgan, grew the business significantly. In 1991, Ben partnered with Neill Brooks to build a new facility on the grounds of Brookland Cemetery in Shepherdsville, creating Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home. The Shepherdsville location has since expanded with a chapel added in 2003 and visitation rooms in 2008. In 2015, a second location opened in Mt. Washington to better serve the community.

The funeral home is intimately connected to Brookland Cemetery, which itself has a storied past dating back to 1779 when Joseph Brooks settled the land. Originally a family cemetery, it evolved into Hebron Cemetery in 1894 and later into Brookland Cemetery in 1986, providing a serene and historic final resting place for generations of families.

Today, Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks offers a full range of services, including traditional burial, cremation, funeral celebrant services, and pre-planning options with benefits like relocation protection, lifetime flexibility, and purchase protection. The facility is wheelchair accessible with on-site parking, and the staff is available 24/7 to assist families in creating meaningful, personalized tributes that honor every life. With a rating of 4.4 stars from 70 reviews, the funeral home continues to blend traditional values with contemporary offerings, ensuring that each family receives the care and respect they deserve.
