About
Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home is a trusted provider of compassionate funeral and cremation services in the Louisville area, with locations in Mount Washington and Shepherdsville, Kentucky. With a legacy spanning more than 130 years, the funeral home is dedicated to helping families create unique and meaningful tributes in a peaceful, supportive setting. The caring and professional staff believes every life deserves to be remembered in a personal way, whether through a traditional funeral, cremation, or celebration of life.
The history of Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks began in 1892 when Edward Schoppenhorst, the son of a German immigrant, left his family’s laundry business to pursue a calling in funeral service. He opened his first funeral home in a stately 1865 residence on West Market Street in Louisville, known for its elegant architecture and an 11-foot glass door handcrafted in France with glass from every European country. For nearly 50 years, Edward and his wife, Flora, served families with compassion and attention to detail, building a reputation for exceptional service. After Edward’s passing in 1941, Flora continued to lead the business with grace and vision, later helping to establish Highlands Funeral Home. In 1976, Ben Underwood purchased the West Market Street location and, together with his mother Hallie Kruse and Neill Brooks, opened the Shepherdsville facility in 1991 on the grounds of Brookland Cemetery. The Mount Washington location was added in the spring of 2015, offering a modern, welcoming space for families in that growing community.
Today, the funeral home provides a full range of services, including traditional burial, cremation, funeral celebrant services, and pre-planning options. The facility is wheelchair accessible with on-site parking, and offers prepayment plans for those who wish to plan ahead. The staff is experienced in honoring diverse faiths and cultural traditions, from Christian and Catholic to Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu customs, as well as secular celebrations. Multiple chapels and visitation parlors with private lounges accommodate services of all sizes, allowing families to gather in comfort. The funeral home also partners with Brookland Cemetery, a historic burial ground that traces its roots to the Brooks family, who settled in Kentucky in 1779. With a 4.1-star rating on Google and 21 reviews, Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home continues to be a pillar of support for the community, blending traditional values with contemporary services to honor every life with dignity and care.
