VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City, Kansas, is a historic funeral home that has been serving the community for over a century. Located at 107 N. 6th Street, the chapel is situated on the corner of 6th and Market, in the same building where funeral services have been provided for more than 150 years. The building’s rich history dates back to the late 1800s, when O.E. “Oscar” McElfresh and his business partner W.P. Deaver operated a storefront offering furniture, carpets, wallpaper, caskets, and undertaking services. After Deaver retired in 1895, McElfresh continued the business with his son, William Leslie, eventually renaming it the W.L. McElfresh Company. As funeral traditions evolved from home-based services to centralized locations, the funeral chapel was incorporated into the north side of the McElfresh store. The McElfresh family operated the mortuary until the late 1970s, when ownership passed to Max and Donna Crable. On January 29, 1999, Mike and Sheri VanArsdale purchased the funeral home, becoming only the third family to own the building in its long history. Today, VanArsdale Funeral Chapel continues to operate from the same building, with many of the original exterior walls still intact, blending modern service with historic charm.
