Founded in 1907 by William Lewis Fleener, the business originally operated out of the back of the family’s furniture store on north Main Street—a common practice at a time when coffin makers also crafted household furniture. This dual-purpose establishment served the community for decades before moving one block north in 1950 to a building that also housed the funeral director’s residence, allowing for around-the-clock availability. The funeral home was tragically destroyed on May 4, 2007, by an EF5 tornado that devastated 95% of Greensburg’s homes and the entire downtown district. Despite the immense loss, fourth-generation funeral director J. Fleener made a steadfast commitment to rebuild. The new facility, completed at its current address, was designed with sustainability and comfort in mind. It features energy-efficient construction and a notable Trombe passive solar wall facing south, which helps regulate indoor temperatures naturally.
