The rich history of Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home began in 1900 when brothers Brazier and Bert Kirby established the Kirby Funeral Home in downtown Greensburg’s historic Knights of Pythias building. In 1921, Charles Howe joined the Kirbys, forming Kirby-Howe Funeral Home. After the Kirby brothers passed away, Charles ran the business alone until 1929, when Dallas Gilliland—a recent graduate of the College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis—joined the team. Dallas later married Charles’s daughter, Beaulah Mae, and became a business partner in 1942. Following Charles’s death in 1947, the Gillilands renamed the firm Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. In 1968, the family opened a state-of-the-art, single-story, handicap-accessible facility on the same lot, replacing the original Woodfill home. The funeral home also operated Decatur County’s ambulance service until the late 1970s. Today, the legacy continues under the Dignity Memorial network, with retired staff member Carl Hellmich still stepping in to assist families when needed. Gilliland-Howe remains committed to the high standards set by its founders, offering personalized memorials, video tributes, online guestbooks, and a 100% service guarantee. Whether for immediate needs or future planning, the team provides compassionate guidance, ensuring every family receives the care and respect they deserve.
