About

Herndon-Fuqua Funeral Homes, located at 403 South Main Street in Hope, Arkansas, is a distinguished funeral service provider with a rich history dating back to 1898. Originally founded as Cornelius Funeral Home by W.M. Cornelius and his father-in-law E.G. Porterfield, the business has undergone several name changes and ownership transitions while maintaining its commitment to compassionate care. In 1899, Cornelius purchased two horse-drawn hearses—a rubber-tire hearse for city use and a steel rim hearse for country processions—powered by four black horses. The driver was instructed to never let the horses trot and to keep the procession moving without stopping. The funeral home remained in the family, passing from Cornelius to his son-in-law R.V. Herndon Sr., then to R.V. Herndon Jr., who bought out his brothers in 1964 and renamed it Herndon Funeral Home. In May 2007, with no family successors, R.V. Herndon Jr. sold the business to Terry and Wendy Pharr, who renamed it Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home. Later that year, the Pharrs expanded by acquiring Shackelford Funeral Home in Prescott and Horne Funeral Home in Gurdon, collectively naming them Pharr Funeral Homes of Arkansas. They also purchased Memory Gardens Cemetery in Hope. After years of service, the Pharrs sold the business to Thomas and Vickers Fuqua of Texarkana, Texas, who renamed it Herndon-Fuqua Funeral Homes. The Fuqua family also owns Texarkana Funeral Home (founded in 1939) and operates multiple funeral homes in Texarkana, New Boston, and DeKalb, Texas, along with cemeteries and a crematory.

Today, Herndon-Fuqua Funeral Homes offers a full range of services designed to honor each loved one uniquely. Their knowledgeable staff guides families through every step of the process. Traditional burial services are conducted with utmost respect, including transportation to local cemeteries. Understanding the growing preference for cremation, they now offer cremation options that include a viewing service, allowing families to say a final goodbye while honoring the deceased's wishes for convenience and affordability. Pre-planning services are available to help individuals document their final wishes, alleviating the burden on family members during their time of need. The funeral home also provides veterans' services and pet funeral services, ensuring that all aspects of a life are celebrated. As reflected in their philosophy, they believe that a family's comfort and honoring a loved one's memory are of paramount importance. With a 4.5-star rating on Google Maps and a strong online presence through their website and obituary listings, Herndon-Fuqua Funeral Homes continues to serve the Hope, Prescott, and Gurdon communities with dignity and professionalism.
