About
Fentress Mortuary, Inc., located at 1805 North A Street in Fort Smith, Arkansas, is a historic funeral home with a legacy of compassionate service spanning over a century. Founded by Oscar A. Fentress in 1913, the business began as the Oscar A. Fentress Undertaking Company in partnership with R.T. Hunt Sr. After purchasing Hunt's interest in 1917 and renaming it Fentress Mortuary, Oscar Fentress moved operations from the Friedman Building to a location at North Eighth and A Streets before commissioning a purpose-built mortuary at the current address in 1931. This Dutch architectural-style building was one of the first in the region designed specifically for funeral services, reflecting Fentress's commitment to modernizing the profession.
Oscar Fentress was a pioneer in funeral service, becoming one of the first state-licensed embalmers in Arkansas in 1909 and later serving as president of the Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors from 1923 to 1934. His efforts raised educational standards, requiring embalmers to have a high school education, graduation from an accredited school, and state board examination. His wife, Mae Yadon Fentress, was Arkansas's first female state-licensed embalmer, known for her warm and sympathetic manner. Together, they introduced the first automobile hearse in Fort Smith in 1915 and expanded services to Van Buren with a funeral home and ambulance service in 1928.
In 1979, the Edwards family purchased Fentress Mortuary, and it later became part of Houston-based Dignity Memorial in 1991. Today, under the management of Sean Rollans, Fentress continues the creed Oscar Fentress established: 'One standard of service, the highest, to all regardless of financial circumstance.' The funeral home provides between 110 and 140 services annually, offering a full range of options including traditional burial, cremation services, an onsite chapel, and casket services. Additional amenities include wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking, language assistance for diverse families, and on-site parking. The facility also features a jewelry store, likely offering memorial jewelry and keepsakes.
With a perfect 5.0 rating from 43 reviews on Google Maps, Fentress Mortuary is praised for its honorable, affordable, and professional care. The business remains dedicated to helping families celebrate the lives of their loved ones, blending a rich history with modern funeral services that honor every family's needs.
