Young's Funeral Directors has a rich and remarkable history. The building itself dates back to 1898 when it was built as a private residence by Emon O. Mahony, a former Union County judge. The house cost $5,000 to build, with lumber shipped down the Mississippi River from St. Louis. It was originally a three-story Craftsman-style home with six fireplaces, original curly pine woodwork, and overhang porches, and it is now considered colonial-style. Over the years, the structure has served multiple purposes: it became one of El Dorado’s first hospitals in 1914, founded by Dr. L.L. Purifoy and known as St. Mary’s Hospital. Later, it transitioned into a funeral home, operating as Hall-McWilliams, then Hall-Chadwell, and finally Hall Funeral Home before Mr. Young purchased the business in 1960. He remodeled the building three years later, and today many original features—including three of the six fireplaces, the original staircase, and the curly pine woodwork—remain intact, preserving the historical character of the facility.
