The Holman family legacy began in 1855 when they settled in Dale County, and the foundation for the mortuary was laid by Wilton Russell Holman, Sr. (1913–1992), a 1934 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. After gaining experience in Ozark, Hartford, and Abbeville, he met Syble Duggan Holman (1913–1988), a registered nurse trained at Frasier-Ellis Hospital School of Nursing in Dothan. Together, they established Holman-Headland Mortuary in Headland in 1938, offering 24-hour ambulance service alongside funeral care. In 1947, the family moved the mortuary to its current location on South Main Street in Headland, making it the first newly constructed facility in Southeast Alabama built specifically as a mortuary. In 1969, the Holman family expanded by founding Holman-Abbeville Mortuary in Abbeville. The following year, in 1970, the two mortuaries were incorporated to include their three sons: Wilton Russell Holman, Jr., Norman Duggan Holman, Sr. (1943–2017), and John Robert Holman, who continue to carry forward their parents' legacy of compassionate service.
